Flugelhorn Lessons

Flugelhorn Lessons

Taking band lessons in school? Want to play professionally in a symphony orchestra

or jazz ensemble setting? At Eagle Rock Music Studio in Los Angeles, flugelhorn

lessons are offered to musicians of all ages and levels. Our flugelhorn students

include both children and adults, with some aspiring to be professionals while

others simply study the instrument for recreational fulfillment. If your situation fits

either scenario, or if it lies somewhere in the middle, Eagle Rock has something for

you that will expand your musical horizons.

History

The flugelhorn is etymologically derived from the German word flügel, meaning

wing or flank. During the great battles of centuries past, German armies would

signal to their flanks with the flugelhorn. The flugelhorn is a member of the brass

family of instruments; like the trumpet — which it closely resembles — the flugelhorn

features three piston valves in most cases. (A flugelhorn with four piston valves also

exists, but is not common.)

Appeal

The flugelhorn typically appears in jazz music, but has popped up on pop and

classical recordings, too. Perhaps its most famous use is on Miles Davis’ seminal

1960 album Sketches of Spain, which featured key flugelhorn arrangements by the

renowned Gil Evans. Likewise, the flugelhorn was the signature of many of Burt

Bacharach’s pop compositions in the 1960s, such as Dionne Warwick’s classic “Walk

on By.”

Lessons

We offer two course paths for flugelhorn players: one for aspiring professionals and

another for those looking to play for enrichment or recreational purposes. At Eagle

Rock Music Studio, we believe every student should learn something new each time

he or she visits us, and that lessons should be fun, engaging, and exciting. Our

coursework focuses on tone production, sight-reading, music theory, and

improvisation.

Practice is extremely important for developing a working proficiency with your

instrument (regardless of skill level), but actually taking your skill to the next level

is best accomplished by working with a professional who can show you the ropes.

Our patient and caring instructors will help you identify your goals and finally get

you over the hump away from dreaming and towards doing. Playing for recreation

may eliminate the stress involved in playing competitively, but the same principles

of identifying goals and working towards their specific solutions still apply when

teaching within this setting.

We also understand that each student has their own goals and learning styles, and

that it is important to tailor the lessons to the individual needs of each and every

student. As a result, all of our flugelhorn lessons are private/one-on-one.

Eagle Rock Music Studios is located just north of downtown Los Angeles between
