Viola Lessons

At Eagle Rock Music Studio, viola players of all ages and skill levels are invited to take lessons with us. Whether you have a child who is just learning to play, or if you are an adult music fan who has always wanted to learn the instrument, or if your situation is something in between, Eagle Rock help you realize your goals.

History

The viola has been in use since the 18th century, occupying the “middle voice” of the violin family between the violin and the cello, and has been in more widespread use since the 20th century. That being said, several of the great composers, such as Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart, actually preferred the viola to the violin when composing for ensembles.

Appeal

Since the viola is still an instrument in widespread use when orchestras perform, it is frequently chosen as an instrument to study by children. Although larger and louder than the violin, the viola has less volume when compared to brass instruments like the trumpet or trombone, so many violists are needed to fill out an orchestral lineup. Because of this, violists will always be in demand. Furthermore, violas are important in chamber music, such as Mozart’s string quintets, which utilized two violas.

Lessons

At Eagle Rock Music Studio we enjoy teaching students of all ages in a wide variety of musical styles. More importantly, however, we recognize our students’ individual aspirations; our goal as teachers is to give our students the ability to improve their lives through music.

During our private lessons with you, we will identify what your goals are and customize our teaching to your specific needs. We offer viola lessons for students, aspiring professionals and for recreation. Preparing for music school admission is tough, and we are here to guide you to that goal, as well as help you overcome additional, smaller obstacles, as well, such as auditions for youth orchestras.

Achieving a satisfactory skill level on the viola takes practice and a regimen from a teacher to identify your goals and then work towards them. The same principles apply to the lessons we give those who want to learn to play the viola recreationally, as well: identifying goals and working towards them with specific solutions in mind still apply when teaching in this setting.
